The Argentina Wine industry is one of the largest producers of wine in the world. Argentina wine got its start in Spain during the Spanish colonization of the Americas. The cultivation of the grape and wine production started in Santiago del Estero in 1557 and then later stretched out into neighboring regions as well as other parts of the country. The Argentina wine industry is now the fifth largest producer of wine in the world and that is thanks to the large variety of grape vineyards that are available in the area.
When Argentina wine was first produced, wine manufacturers were more concerned with the quantity that they produced and not the overall quality of the product that they were making. The country at that time was consuming nearly 90% of all the Argentina wine that was being made. Up until the early 1990s, Argentina wine was being produced more than any other wine in any other country outside of Europe. However most of it was considered to be unexportable. The desire to improve the importing and exporting procedures sparked a movement and Argentina wines began to be produced and exported to other countries soon after, allowing these wines to grow more in popularity with wine enthusiasts all over the world.
Wine production was first introduced to the area of Argentina during the Spanish colonization of the Americans and then later by the Christian missionaries. The first vineyard in Argentina was established in 1556 by Father Juan Cedron. It included cuttings from the Chilean Central Valley. This helped to firmly establish viticulture in the country of Argentina and allowed the wine that we all know and love today to get its start.
The growing season for vineyards that are used to create Argentina wine usually lasts from October to harvest time in February. The main form of government that controls the production of wine in Argentina is known as the Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura. They are responsible for declaring when the beginning date will be for harvest in each wine region as well as how long each vineyard harvest season will last each year. While there are many wine regions in the country, the majority of Argentina wine that is produced takes place in the western expanse of the country that leads up to the foothills of the Andes mountains. This is known as the Mendoza region and is the largest region and leading producer of wine in the country, responsible for two-thirds of all wine produced.
There is a large variety of grapes that are grown in the vineyards of Argentina. The warm climate and desert-like landscapes allow for the grapes to grow with the right amount of sugar and tartness so that they add the perfect flavor to each bottle of Argentina wine that is made. The French brought Malbec grapes to the area which is used to create one of Argentina’s most popular wines. The Italians brought over grape vines called Bonarda which is similar to the Dolcetto. Other popular grape varieties that are widely grown in the area include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
